The Interstate Bridge has carried traffic over the Columbia since 1917 and it still stops to let ships through, which is a very old way of admitting that two things need the same piece of space. Downtown got its riverfront back a few years ago, and the pier went up with it. Mount Hood sits behind all of it on the days it feels like being seen.
