We cross the Bay enough to have firm opinions about I-80 from five in the morning until eleven, and again from two in the afternoon until midnight. The Ferry Building is up there because it has spent more than a century getting people across the water on a schedule, and because a clock everybody can see is a promise you cannot quietly miss.
